As the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games draw closer, our efforts to transform Physical Education (PE) and sport through the creation of a world-class system are increasing. It is an ambition which lies at the heart of the legacy aims of the London Games. The five hour offer is a national priority to enable every young person aged 5 to 16 to have access to five hours of PE and sport (three hours for 16 to 19 year olds).

We are working with all partners in the London Borough of Redbridge to ensure there is a universal five hour offer in place across the borough. We are making PE and sport more accessible, attractive, affordable and appropriate to the needs of young people.

To help measure progress towards the five hour offer, we are working towards the following success measures:

  • by the end of academic year 2010-2011, 40% of young people to take part in 5 hours of PE and sport a week (In July 2009, 19% of young people were taking part in 5 hours of PE and sport each week in the Mayfield School Sports Partnership)
  • by the end of academic year 2010-2011, 80% of 5-16 year olds to take part in 3 hours a week of PE and sport organised by schools. (In July 2009, 32% of 5-16 year olds were taking part in 3 hours a week of PE and sport on a school site in the Mayfield School Sports Partnership)
  • by the end of academic year 2012-2013, 60% of young people to take part in 5 hours of PE and sport a week.
