What are they?

  • Designed by the Mayfield School Sports Partnership to increase the local opportunities for pupils in primary schools.

 Why are we doing them?

  • Our remit is to give every child the opportunity to represent their school in a competition. The logistics of transporting all children to a central venue is difficult for schools as well as expensive! Therefore we are piloting this new concept of competitions to reduce the strain on primary schools by inviting a whole class to walk to a local school for a competition organised by the SSCo and sports leaders.

What does it mean for you?

  • Less work for the Primary Link Teacher!
  • Pass the responsibility onto the class teacher to organise the event. As long as you give your SSCo the details of the class teacher they can organise it directly with them.
  • Cheaper - no supply day as the whole class goes with their teacher and no transport costs

 How will it work?

  • Each half-term we will focus on 2 specific year groups. The events will be multi-skill based and each child will take part in intra and inter school competition.
  • Autumn Term: Year 4 (Net & Wall Skills) / Year 2 (Multi-skills)
  • Spring Term: Year 3 (Sports Hall Athletics) / Year 5 (Invasion Game Skills)
  • Summer Term: Year 1 (Multi-Skills) / Year 6 (Striking & Fielding Skills)

What if the host school isn't within walking distance?

  • In some circumstances the host school will not be within walking distance for the age group of children (e.g. Year 1 children). The SSP will pay for transport in these circumstances. Please ask your SSCo to organise this.

 Are these replacing Partnership competitions?

  • The next-door neighbour competitions will be replacing some competitions but our main traditional events will still be taking place. These have been organised into one per half term.
  • Autumn 1: Year 5/6 Tag Rugby @ Mayfield
  • Autumn 2: Year 5/6 Basketball @ Chadwell Heath
  • Spring 1: Year 5/6 Sports Hall Athletics @ Wanstead
  • Spring 2: The Dance Festival @ Ursuline & Mayfield
  • Summer 1: Year 2 Sports Hall Athletics @ Woodbridge
  • Summer 2: The Year 4 Olympics @ Sports Centre

Can my school host an event?

  • Yes absolutely. All we need is a hall which can accommodate at least 60 children or an outside space. SSCo's will be asking schools to offer their halls. Also some events will take place at the local secondary school.

What are the groups?

  • The groups have been clustered for geographical reasons. When a next-door neighbour cluster includes schools across the SSP clusters, two SSCo's will be running the events.

Downloads for the next door neighbour competitions can be found in the resources section.
